The Silang Revolt: Ilocano Rebellion Against Spanish Rule — Fexingo History

Paglalarawan

In 1762, as British forces occupied Manila, a spark of rebellion ignited in the Ilocos region. Diego Silang, a literate and charismatic Ilocano, saw an opportunity to break free from Spanish tyranny. He rallied his countrymen, forged an alliance with the British, and briefly established an independent government in Vigan. But his success was short-lived—assassinated by a fellow Ilocano, his cause was taken up by his wife, Gabriela Silang, who became a legendary figure in Philippine history. This episode explores the Silang Revolt, its roots in Spanish abuses like the tobacco monopoly and forced labor, the role of the British occupation, and the tragic heroism of Gabriela. We'll examine how the rebellion reflected broader tensions in the colony and its enduring legacy as a symbol of Filipino resistance.
