The Pampanga Uprising of 1660: Filipino Revolt Against Spain — Fexingo History

Paglalarawan

Episode 34 of The History of the Philippines turns to a pivotal but often overlooked rebellion: the Pampanga Uprising of 1660. Led by the charismatic panday (blacksmith) Francisco Maniago, the Kapampangan people rose against the forced labor system known as polo y servicios and the oppressive tribute demands of Spanish colonial authorities. This episode explores the roots of the revolt in the Manila Galleon trade—which required hundreds of local laborers to build ships—and the spark that ignited it: the arrest of Maniago's wife. We follow the course of the rebellion, from the sacking of haciendas to the siege of the Spanish fort in Bacolor, and examine the complex aftermath: a negotiated surrender that promised reforms but delivered little. Along the way, we discuss the role of the principalía (native elite), the punitive expedition led by Governor-General Sabiniano Manrique de Lara, and the legacy of the revolt in shaping Kapampangan identity. This episode draws on primary sources like the Relación of Fray Francisco Coronel to reconstruct a moment when the fragile Spanish colonial order was nearly broken by an alliance of farmers, blacksmiths, and warriors.#History #FexingoHistory #Philippines #Pampanga #FranciscoManiago #PoloYServicios #PhilippineRevolts #Kapampangan #Bacolor #ManilaGalleon #ColonialSpain #Principalia #SabinianoManriqueDeLara #1660 #Uprising #SoutheastAsia #ForcedLabor #Resistance #BanaueRiceTerraces #SpanishColonialismBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-history-of-the-philippines-empires-colonization-and-identity-fexingo-history--6985184/support.
