The One Unit Policy: How Pakistan Tried to Merge Provinces

Paglalarawan

In the mid-1950s, Pakistan’s leaders faced a crisis of identity and governance. With distinct provinces like Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, and the North-West Frontier Province operating with significant autonomy, the central government struggled to create a unified national policy. Enter General Ayub Khan and the architects of the One Unit scheme, which sought to merge all western provinces into a single administrative entity called 'West Pakistan.' This episode explores the political maneuvering behind this bold experiment, from the initial proposals by Governor-General Ghulam Muhammad to the implementation under Iskander Mirza. We examine how the policy was designed to counterbalance the demographic weight of East Pakistan, often referred to as Bengal, and how it fundamentally altered the relationship between the center and the periphery. Through the voices of key figures like Chaudhry Muhammad Ali and the resistance from local leaders in Balochistan and Sindh, we uncover why this top-down consolidation sparked deep resentment. The story reveals how bureaucratic centralization failed to erase cultural distinctiveness, ultimately contributing to the eventual dissolution of the scheme and shaping the ethnic tensions that would define Pakistan’s future politics. #OneUnitPolicy #PakistanHistory #AyubKhan #GhulamMuhammad #IskanderMirza #ChaudhryMuhammadAli #WestPakistan #EastPakistan #BalochistanHistory #SindhPolitics #NorthWestFrontierProvince #PunjabProvincialism #1955Pakistan #Centralization #EthnicIdentity #FexingoHistory #SouthAsianHistory #History Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
