The Igbo Apprenticeship System: Nigeria's Economic Underbelly — Fexingo History

Paglalarawan

In this episode of The History of Nigeria, Lucas and Luna explore the Igbo apprenticeship system, a centuries-old economic model that has shaped entrepreneurship in Southeastern Nigeria. They trace its roots to pre-colonial Igbo society, where trade networks and the concept of 'igba boy' (serving as an apprentice) were central to community life. The conversation covers the transformation of this system under British colonial rule, the rise of the Onitsha market, and the role of the Igbo Union in protecting apprentices' rights. They also discuss the 1929 Aba Women's War from an economic perspective, the post-civil war resurgence of the apprenticeship model, and its influence on modern 'talent management' in Nigeria's tech hubs. Lucas highlights Nnewi's industrial success as a case study, and they reflect on the system's controversies, including its gendered limits and generational tensions. The episode ends with a question about the future of this informal economy in Nigeria's evolving marketplace.#IgboApprenticeship #IgbaBoy #OnitshaMarket #NnewiIndustrialists #AbaWomenWar #IgboEconomy #PrecolonialTrade #ColonialNigeria #Entrepreneurship #NigerianBusiness #TalentManagement #InformalEconomy #Biafra #NigerianHistory #WestAfrica #IgboCulture #History #FexingoHistory #NigeriaHistory #BeninKingdomBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-history-of-nigeria-kingdoms-colonies-and-africa-s-giant-fexingo-history--6985098/support.
