The Boxer Codex: Imagining the Pre-Colonial Philippines — Fexingo History

Paglalarawan

Long before the Spanish arrived, the Philippines was a world of complex societies, trade networks, and cultural diversity. In this episode, Lucas and Luna explore the Boxer Codex, a 1590 manuscript that offers one of the earliest visual and written records of the islands and their neighbors. Commissioned by Spanish officials, the codex contains 97 color illustrations of indigenous peoples from the Philippines, China, Japan, and Southeast Asia, alongside descriptions of their customs, dress, and governance. Lucas explains how the codex was created, the mystery of its discovery in a Spanish library in the 1940s, and what it reveals about pre-colonial societies like the Tagalogs, Visayans, and Zambals. They discuss the accuracy of the illustrations, the biases of the Spanish chroniclers, and what the codex tells us about tattooing, social hierarchy, and trade. Luna notes how the codex provides a rare glimpse into a world that would soon be transformed by colonization. The episode ends with a reflection on how such documents shape our understanding of history and identity. Listeners will come away with a vivid picture of the Philippines on the eve of Spanish conquest.#BoxerCodex #PreColonialPhilippines #Manila #Tagalog #Visayan #Zambal #MigueldeLoarca #SpanishColonialism #1600s #Tattoo #SoutheastAsia #IndigenousPeoples #Manuscript #History #FexingoHistory #PhilippineHistory #ColonialArt #Ethnography #Philippines #BanaueRiceTerracesBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-history-of-the-philippines-empires-colonization-and-identity-fexingo-history--6985184/support.
