What If the Philippines Stayed British? The Anda Occupation — Fexingo History

Description

In 1762, British forces captured Manila during the Seven Years' War, but they never conquered the entire Philippines. This episode follows the resistance led by Simón de Anda y Salazar, who escaped Manila and set up a rival government in Bacolor, Pampanga. Anda rallied Filipinos, Chinese mestizos, and indigenous groups against the British, using guerrilla tactics and leveraging local loyalties. The British, meanwhile, struggled with disease, limited resources, and an uneasy alliance with the Sultan of Sulu. We explore how Anda's makeshift government issued its own currency, raised armies, and maintained Spanish authority in most of the archipelago. The episode also examines the war's long-term impact: the British occupation exposed Spanish colonial weakness, fueled anti-Spanish sentiment, and accelerated reforms. What if the British had won? We discuss the counterfactual and its implications for Philippine identity. Featuring details on the Battle of Manila, the British evacuation, and the secret treaty of 1763.#SimNDeAnda #BritishOccupation #SevenYearsWar #Manila1762 #Pampanga #Bacolor #PhilippineResistance #DawsonDrake #SultanOfSulu #ColonialPhilippines #GuerrillaWarfare #CounterfactualHistory #PhilippineHistory #AndaOccupation #FexingoHistory #History #18thCentury #SpanishColony #Philippines #BanaueRiceTerracesBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-history-of-the-philippines-empires-colonization-and-identity-fexingo-history--6985184/support.
