The 1639 Sangley Uprising: Chinese Revolt in Colonial Manila — Fexingo History

Description

Episode 37 of The History of the Philippines turns to the 1639 massacre of Chinese residents in Manila, known as the Sangley Uprising. Lucas and Luna trace the roots of this violent episode to the Spanish colonial system of segregation and forced labor in the Parian district. They explore the role of the alcalde mayor, the burning of the Parian, and the massacre of an estimated 20,000 Sangleys. The conversation also touches on the aftermath: the rebuilding of the Chinese community, the continued cycle of rebellion and repression, and the long-term impact on Philippine society, including the rise of the Chinese mestizo class. Specific figures like Governor-General Sebastián Hurtado de Corcuera, the symbolic significance of the burning of the Parian, and the economic interdependence between Spain and Chinese merchants are examined. The episode offers a nuanced look at racial tensions, colonial violence, and resilience in 17th-century Manila.#SangleyUprising #Sangley #Parian #Manila #1639 #ChineseFilipino #SpanishColonial #Philippines #AlcaldeMayor #SebastiNHurtadoDeCorcuera #ColonialViolence #MestizoDeSangley #GalleonTrade #Bataan #PhilippineHistory #History #FexingoHistory #Podcast #BanaueRiceTerraces #SpanishColonialismBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-history-of-the-philippines-empires-colonization-and-identity-fexingo-history--6985184/support.
