The Trade That Built Ancient Philippines — Fexingo History

Description

Long before Spanish galleons crossed the Pacific, the Philippine archipelago was a vital hub in a vast maritime trading network connecting East Asia, Southeast Asia, India, and the Middle East. This episode explores the pre-colonial trading world of the Philippines—how Chinese porcelain, Indian textiles, and Middle Eastern glass reached the islands, and what Filipinos traded in return: beeswax, pearls, tortoiseshell, and gold. We trace the rise of early polities like the Kingdom of Tondo and the Rajahnate of Butuan, which prospered through strategic alliances and trade with powerful neighbors such as the Srivijaya Empire and the Ming Dynasty. Archaeological evidence, including the Laguna Copperplate Inscription and shipwrecks like the Pandanan Wreck, reveals a sophisticated commercial system with standardized weights, currencies, and credit. We also examine the social and political impact of this trade: how it enabled the rise of datu, the spread of Islam, and the creation of a cosmopolitan culture that blended indigenous traditions with foreign influences. By the time the Spanish arrived, the Philippines was already connected to a global economy—a fact often overlooked in colonial narratives.
