The Galleon Trade's Forgotten Crew: Sangleys, Slaves, and Sailors — Fexingo History

Description

For over two centuries, the Manila Galleon was the lifeline of the Spanish Philippines, carrying silver from Acapulco and returning with Chinese silks, spices, and porcelain. But who actually sailed and built these massive ships? In this episode, Lucas and Luna explore the hidden workforce behind the galleon trade: the Chinese merchants and artisans known as Sangleys, the Filipino and Mexican sailors and laborers, and the enslaved rowers who powered the ships. We follow the journey of the galleon from the forests of Cavite, where Sangleys felled timber and constructed the hulls, to the treacherous Pacific crossing, where disease, storms, and scurvy killed more men than any enemy. We examine the Sangley community's role in colonial economy and society, their periodic massacres at Spanish hands, and how the galleon trade shaped Philippine identity—creating a mestizo class, tying the islands to Latin America, and fostering a global exchange long before globalization became a buzzword. From the Chinese junks that brought goods to Manila's Parian to the silver that ended up in Ming dynasty treasuries, this episode uncovers the human cost and cultural fusion of the first world-spanning trade route.#ManilaGalleon #Sangley #ChineseInPhilippines #MaritimeHistory #ColonialPhilippines #GalleonTrade #Parian #AsianHistory #GlobalTrade #Mestizo #SpanishEmpire #PacificHistory #Acapulco #Cavite #Slavery #EconomicHistory #History #FexingoHistory #Philippines #BanaueRiceTerracesBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-history-of-the-philippines-empires-colonization-and-identity-fexingo-history--6985184/support.
