The Chinese Mestizos: Middlemen of Colonial Philippines — Fexingo History

Description

In this episode, Lucas and Luna explore the rise of the Chinese mestizo class in the Spanish Philippines—a group that became the economic backbone of the colony. From the Sangley traders of the Parian to the wealthy mestizo elite who financed churches and dominated the galleon trade, we trace how a mix of blood and commerce created a powerful social layer. We discuss the 1603 and 1639 Sangley massacres, the role of the alcaldes mayores, and how figures like Don Antonio Tuason built vast estates. We also look at how the mestizos navigated Spanish racial laws, eventually becoming the ilustrados who would later lead the revolution. This is the story of the people who bridged two worlds and shaped the modern Philippines.#ChineseMestizos #Sangley #Parian #ManilaGalleon #SpanishPhilippines #Mestizo #Ilustrado #DonAntonioTuason #Binondo #AlcaldeMayor #GalleonTrade #ColonialPhilippines #PhilippineHistory #FexingoHistory #History #SoutheastAsianHistory #TradeHistory #CulturalHybridity #Philippines #BanaueRiceTerracesBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-history-of-the-philippines-empires-colonization-and-identity-fexingo-history--6985184/support.
