Madrid's Forgotten Colony: The Philippines Under the Bourbon Reforms — Fexingo History

Description

In the late 18th century, Spain's Bourbon monarchs launched sweeping reforms to modernize their empire, and the Philippines became an unlikely laboratory. But when King Charles III ordered the establishment of the Intendencia system in 1785, it set off a chain reaction that would reshape Philippine society for generations. This episode explores how Bourbon reforms—from the creation of the Real Compañía de Filipinas to the secularization of parishes—clashed with entrenched colonial interests. We follow the rise of the ilustrado class, the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1768, and the quiet but profound transformation of Manila into a city of Enlightenment ideas. Listen as we uncover the untold story of how a Spanish king's vision for efficiency and profit inadvertently sowed the seeds of Filipino nationalism.#Philippines #BourbonReforms #SpanishColony #KingCharlesIII #Intendencia #RealCompaIaDeFilipinas #JesuitExpulsion #Ilustrado #Manila #Enlightenment #ColonialHistory #PhilippineHistory #SoutheastAsia #18thCentury #History #FexingoHistory #ColonialReforms #Secularization #BanaueRiceTerraces #SpanishColonialismBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-history-of-the-philippines-empires-colonization-and-identity-fexingo-history--6985184/support.
