How a Therapist Turned Telehealth Into Greater Access

Description

When the world shut down, therapist and entrepreneur Brandi Davis saw more than a temporary shift to Zoom. She saw an opportunity to rethink who could access therapy and how. As founder of Backpocket Counseling Counseling Services, she builds a telehealth therapy practice around convenience, privacy, and one essential belief: the right therapist-client match matters. Brandi explores why readiness, not location, drives meaningful progress, how COVID accelerated a lasting change in mental health care, and why she remains cautious about AI entering deeply personal conversations. She also reveals why staying hands-on with clients shapes her leadership and how she is taking her message beyond the therapy room. What started as a forced pivot is challenging old assumptions about where real therapeutic work can happen.Key TakeawaysTelehealth expands access by removing geography, travel time, and privacy barriers.Finding the right therapist-client match is fundamental to effective therapy.A client’s readiness to do the work matters more than whether therapy happens online or in person.AI can provide feedback, but Brandi warns that validation loops can become dangerous in serious mental health distress.Staying active as a clinician helps Brandi mentor her team while building a larger mental health platform.Notable Quotes“Therapy at the end of the day is about a good match.”“I don’t think that you can replace the human connection.”“Confidentiality is the most important thing.”“If you’re ready to do the work, you’re going to do the work.”“People are always growing and changing and restabilizing around a new norm.”
