The Tasaday Hoax: A Tribe Lost and Found in the Philippine Press — Fexingo History

Deskripsi

In 1971, the world was captivated by the discovery of the Tasaday, a supposedly isolated Stone Age tribe living in the rainforest of Mindanao. They were heralded as a living relic of the prehistoric past, untouched by modern civilization. But within a decade, doubts emerged: were they a genuine lost tribe or an elaborate hoax orchestrated by Manuel Elizalde Jr., a Philippine government official with ties to Ferdinand Marcos? This episode explores the controversial story of the Tasaday, the role of media sensation, and the clash between anthropological inquiry and political manipulation. We follow the narrative from the initial discovery by a hunter named Dafal, through the international frenzy led by National Geographic and the Marcos regime, to the later investigations that revealed evidence of fraud. We also consider the Tasaday themselves—Blit, Lobo, Dul, and others—caught between tradition and exploitation. What does the Tasaday hoax tell us about the construction of indigenous identity, the ethics of anthropological research, and the enduring hunger for a pristine past? Lucas and Luna explore these questions with nuance, respecting the real people involved while dissecting the deception.#Tasaday #Mindanao #ManuelElizaldeJr #FerdinandMarcos #PhilippineHistory #Anthropology #Hoax #IndigenousPeoples #NationalGeographic #PhilippinePolitics #1970s #MediaSensation #JungleTribe #StoneAge #Controversy #FexingoHistory #History #SoutheastAsia #Philippines #BanaueRiceTerracesBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-history-of-the-philippines-empires-colonization-and-identity-fexingo-history--6985184/support.
