The End of the Voting Rights Act | Office Hours

تفصیل

In this episode of Office Hours with Dr. Roy, Dr. Roy Casagranda examines the slow dismantling of voting rights in the United States and asks whether American democracy can survive growing political manipulation, voter suppression, and gerrymandering. Beginning with the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and moving through major Supreme Court decisions like Shelby County v. Holder and recent Louisiana redistricting cases, Roy explains how minority representation has been weakened over time and why modern gerrymandering functions as a form of legalized election rigging. The conversation also explores ranked-choice voting, political apathy, voter turnout, media manipulation, and the widening gap between democratic ideals and political reality in the United States. Recorded live while missile alerts sounded across the UAE, this Office Hours became an unexpectedly timely discussion about democracy, power, and institutional decline. ~~~ Become a Student Member to participate in live class session and access full course archives.
