The 1958 Coup: Ayub Khan’s Rise and the End of Democracy

تفصیل

In 1958, Pakistan stood on the brink of collapse, paralyzed by political infighting and economic stagnation. This episode explores the decisive moment when General Ayub Khan staged a bloodless coup, ending the First Republic and installing martial law. We trace the fragility of the early parliamentary system, from the chaotic tenure of Prime Minister Feroz Khan Noon to the controversial role of President Iskander Mirza in inviting the military into politics. Lucas details how Ayub justified his seizure of power as a necessary intervention to save the state from itself, launching an era of 'Basic Democracies' that would redefine Pakistani governance for decades. Luna asks about the immediate public reaction and the constitutional changes that followed. Together, they examine the legacy of this turning point, where the promise of democratic stability was traded for military-backed modernization. #AyubKhan #IskanderMirza #PakistanHistory #MartialLaw1958 #SouthAsiaHistory #FerozKhanNoon #GhulamMuhammad #BasicDemocracies #FirstRepublic #MilitaryCoup #PoliticalInstability #Karachi #Islamabad #ConstitutionalCrisis #FexingoHistory #ColdWarAsia #PostColonialPolitics #HistoryPodcast Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
