Over 70% of the Earth is covered in water, yet nearly 95% of the ocean remains unexplored. The ocean is powerful, mysterious, and often misunderstood. But within its depths, I didn’t just discover marine life—I discovered myself. Through scuba diving, I learned that these vast, untamable bodies of water are not something to fear, but something to learn from. The ocean became a mirror, reflecting how we can move through our own land-dwelling lives with greater awareness, humility, and calm. As I began to understand the ocean’s power, my competence grew—along with my confidence. In that calm created by knowledge, I could finally slow down and truly appreciate the underwater world around me. Fear gave way to clarity, and clarity gave way to awe. That awe revealed the ocean for what it truly is: another extension of God’s glory, grace, and majesty. Every sea creature plays a vital role in maintaining balance, much like humans do within our own ecosystems. Each life form has a purpose, and each contributes to something greater than itself. Unnerving as it may sound, these underwater realizations allowed me to float peacefully just five to six feet away from sharks. Neither party feared the other. In that moment, we coexisted in quiet harmony—two life forms respecting each other’s presence. While I would never have volunteered to swim with sharks, the experience dismantled long-held anxieties. I felt a kind of intellectual buoyancy—a lightness that comes from understanding rather than resisting fear.
