On today’s program, Caty Weaver and Mario Ritter, Jr. host the show. Caty tells listeners what they are going to hear. (:51) First, John Russell tells about the American writer Pearl Buck. Buck turned her life experience as a religious worker in China into stories and books about poor Chinese farmers. The American public liked her work, and she produced many bestsellers. Her success led to a Nobel Prize in 1938. https://learningenglish.voanews.com/a/pearl-s-buck-the-first-american-woman-to-win-a-nobel-prize-in-literature-/7980858.html (5:01) After that, Caty reports on new kinds of fruits and vegetable that are being developed for gardeners. An independent, nonprofit group identifies newly developed garden plants as top choices for gardeners. Here is a list of fruits and vegetables from the Associated Press that gardeners might like to try. https://learningenglish.voanews.com/a/new-fruits-and-vegetables-for-gardeners-to-try/7983385.html (12:01) Then, Alice Bryant and Phil Dierking have some advice for English learners who want to increase the number of words they know and use in speech. Learning common prefixes and suffixes can help you expand your English vocabulary and ease learning new words. Prefixes and suffixes are additions that are placed at the beginning or the end of words and which change a root word’s meaning. https://learningenglish.voanews.com/a/raise-your-english-level-with-more-vocabulary/7148252.html (19:54) Finally, Andrew Smith and Jill Robbins present another episode of Lesson of the Day. Today, they explain how to use “whose.” In Lesson 37 of Let’s Learn English, Anna finds a person’s bag, that leads a discussion of the possessive adjective “whose” and also the subject verb, “who’s.” Jill and Andrew use dialogue from the lesson to talk about ways to express ownership. There is even a chant to help you remember possessives. https://learningenglish.voanews.com/a/lets-learn-english-lesson-37-lets-agree-to-disagree/3574029.html Then, Caty and Mario sign off. --------- Learning English is
