How 16,000 Nomads Destroyed an Empire (Dandanqan 1040) | Ramadan Series 2026

تفصیل

In Episode 8 of his Ramadan Series, shaykh Yasir tackles how did the most powerful army in the 11th-century Islamic world, a force commanding immense wealth, iron-clad discipline, and terrifying war elephants, lose everything in just three days? They thought they were crushing a simple disorder. A minor nuisance. A nomadic rival who had forgotten his place. They were wrong. This is the untold story of the Battle of Dandanqan (1040 CE). It is a story of fatal miscalculations, where the heavy armor of an established empire became its own tomb in the arid deserts of Central Asia. The mighty Ghaznavids, famous for conquering India, marched into the sand chasing ghosts: the swift, nimble Seljuk Turkic horse archers. It was a tactical nightmare. While the imperial army grew exhausted, thirsty, and divided, the Seljuks did not care. They were masters of the steppe, content with little, and waited for the perfect moment to strike. This wasn't just a clash of military tactics; it was a moment where Muslims fought Muslims, each side convinced of their own legitimacy. The consequences of this obscure battle, fought far from the great capitals of Islam, reshaped the political map of the Middle East for centuries to come. It directly led to the rise of the Great Seljuk Empire and the eventual downfall of Byzantine dominance at Manzikert. Watch to find out how an unstoppable empire was brought to its knees by 16,000 horsemen, and why this battle still echoes uncomfortably into our own moment.
