Description
In 1919, a huge tank filled with molasses burst in Boston, Massachusetts, sending a wave of sticky syrup through the streets. The hot molasses moved fast—over 30 miles per hour—flooding homes, streets, and buildings. It caused great damage and even took lives. People and horses got trapped, and rescue workers had to wade through thick, knee-deep syrup. The disaster taught engineers the importance of safety checks and strong construction.
