Description
SN ARCHIVES - Elizabethan Playwrights Series - Educational Programme. John Webster (c. 1578 – c. 1634) wrote The Duchess of Malfi (c. 1613), a dark masterpiece of Jacobean tragedy, a searing exploration of corruption, social class, and the resilience of the individual spirit against tyrannical power. The play centres on the newly-widowed Duchess, who, defying the incestuous, controlling wishes of her two brothers—Duke Ferdinand and the Cardinal—secretly marries Antonio, her virtuous but lower-class steward. This transgression ignites a tragic chain of events, driven by her brothers' obsessive rage and abuse of political and religious authority. The brothers deploy the morally conflicted malcontent, Bosola, as their spy, whose cynicism and eventual remorse complicate his role as both a villainous agent and the Duchess's eventual, if belated, avenger. Webster uses poetic, chilling language to frame the macabre court of Italy as a stage for human wickedness, presenting the Duchess's unwavering dignity in the face of psychological torture and execution as a profound critique of patriarchal society and corrupt nobility. The play’s enduring power is evidenced by its various interpretations, notably the 1972 BBC production directed by James MacTaggart, which featured a stately and intelligent performance by Eileen Atkins as the title character. This version, part of the Stage 2 television series, emphasized the play's psychological depth and macabre atmosphere through strong performances and dramatic lighting, making compelling use of the historic Chastleton House to frame the drama of forbidden passion and political intrigue. The tragedy culminates not just in the death of the noble Duchess, but in a final, bloody act of reciprocal revenge and madness, consuming the Cardinal, Ferdinand (driven insane by lycanthropia), and Bosola. This final reckoning, though violent, closes the circle of corruption, leaving only the hope of restoration in the form of the Duchess’s surviving son. BBC The Duchess of Malfi (1972) - Ful
