Description

In a discussion with Robins McIntosh, Executive V.P. of CP Foods, about chronic disease issues with shrimp, he explains that breeding has nearly tripled growth rates, but farmers often fail to compensate for this difference with infrastructure and operational upgrades. Consequently, shrimp biomass may exceed the pond’s carrying capacity leading to water quality and disease issues. Water sterilization, which became popular during the EMS outbreak, also has proven to have negative side effects due to disruption of the beneficial bacterial community in ponds.
