Tackling Hope, Political ‘Darkness’, and Unhinged Memes - Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Ahok)

Description

Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, or Ahok, joins Andovi and Abigail for an unfiltered conversation, tackling both serious and offbeat questions. Ahok opens up about how he stayed hopeful during his time in prison, his relationship with Anies Baswedan, and his thoughts on being thrust into the spotlight as a prominent Chinese-Indonesian political icon. Ahok, known for his fiery personality, rose to prominence alongside Jokowi when they won the Jakarta gubernatorial election in 2012. After Jokowi ascended to the presidency, Ahok made history as the first Chinese-Indonesian to serve as Governor of Jakarta. In 2017, he ran for re-election but was defeated by rival Anies Baswedan. However, his political journey took a controversial turn in October 2016 when he faced accusations of blasphemy, resulting in a two-year prison sentence.
