S4 E5: All Souls on the Highway

Description

Season 4 • Episode 5 — All Souls on the Highway: The Rituals and Ghosts of Undas. A humid wind carries the smell of melted wax down an empty highway. Headlights cut narrow tunnels through blackness, and for a heartbeat something—familiar or foreign—flickers at the edge of your vision. Every November, as families light candles and remember the dead, the roads themselves change: liminal corridors where the living and the departed brush against one another in uncanny, unforgettable ways. Tonight we travel those highways. Hear stories of spectral hitchhikers, haunted buses, and midnight figures walking the shoulder. Learn the regional rituals—Panag-apoy in Sagada, inlubi offerings in Pangasinan, tulod in Bicol, tumba-tumba in San Narciso—that invite the dead to return for a night. Listen to first-person accounts: a child greeting unseen relatives from the backseat, a lone traveler who watches ghostly candle-bearers pass on the expressway, and families who wake to find offerings taken or strange handprints on the altar. We’ll trace the threads of these beliefs from precolonial animism through Catholic practice and into modern Undas: why the veil feels thin this time of year, how grief and exhaustion shape what we see on long journeys, and what comfort—if any—these encounters bring. Trigger warning: this episode includes unsettling eyewitness accounts and discussions of grief and loss. Please listen with care. Share your own road stories or rituals at storiesphpodcast@gmail.com.
