Metacognition: Avoiding Plastic Thinking with AI

Description

Learn how to use AI without losing your ability to think. This episode explores the concept of metacognition: the discipline of thinking about your own thinking. Discover how overreliance on AI can create 'plastic thinking' - work that looks sharp but lacks depth - and how leaders can reclaim the reflective edge that fuels real judgement. You’ll hear about a simple but powerful technique called the 'reflective reset', how to reframe prompts to keep your reasoning active, and how to help teams use AI as a thinking companion rather than a substitute for intelligence.CHAPTERS00:00:00: What is metacognition?00:01:45: The lure of plastic thinking00:03:00: Why AI can numb reflection00:04:10: The reflective reset technique00:05:00: Building metacognitive habits in teams00:06:10: The human edge: reflection and conscienceRESOURCES MENTIONEDEnhanced Leadership: Lee’s new book on how leaders build clarity and confidence in complex environments. https://mybook.to/EnhancedLeadershipLevel Up Leadership: Main hub for episodes, articles, and leadership tools.KEY TAKEAWAYS FOR LEADERSAsk before you prompt: define what you want to learn.Interrogate AI output: look for missing assumptions.Schedule reflective resets: create distance before judging ideas.Replace knee-jerk productivity with slow clarity.Model reflection publicly to normalise better thinking habits.KEY TAKEAWAYS FOR COACHESHelp clients distinguish between analysis and reflection.Encourage 'audit before adoption' of AI tools.Use metacognitive prompts in debriefs to surface blind spots.Track emotional responses to AI output - these often reveal values conflicts.Reinforce reflection as a leadership muscle, not a luxury.Thank you for watching/ listening.Follow LevelUp!https://www.levelupleadership.uk/Music, jingles, and images - attribution.Podcast Background Track: https://pixabay.com/users/poorartistt-45918667/Guitar Jingle: https://pixabay.com/music/introoutro-guitar-intro-ident-151972/Swoosh Sound Effect: https://pixabay.com/users/universfield-28281460/Images: https://g
