Mahi Mahi is a powerful Punjabi Sufi Qawwali about the fire of Ishq a fire that burns away the self and reveals the Beloved everywhere. “Ishq di agg… jis tan laagi, so jal gaya.” The song begins with a deep male alaap before opening into a traditional Qawwali arrangement built around harmonium, tanpura, tabla, dholak, handclaps and male chorus. The restrained opening gradually grows into an ecstatic rhythmic climax, echoing the energy of a live Sufi mehfil. At the heart of the Kalam is the search for the Mahi: “Main vi dhoondan Ranjhe nu Jangal bele, shehr bazaraan Koi dasse, koi sunaye Kithe lukda Mahi mera.” But the search eventually turns inward. “Heer vi main, Ranjha vi main Sohni vi main, Mahiwal vi Sassi vi main, Punnu vi main.” The legendary lovers become symbols of the seeker and the sought different names, different stories, but one reality of Ishq.
