Description

The Democratic Republic of the Congo in the heart of Africa has long been the target of exploitation, slavery and greed. The Congo's heartbreaking history began with King Leopold II of Belgium's theft of the Congo in the mid-1800's. Enslaving the entire Congo Free State for the ivory and rubber trades, Leopold II is responsible for the deaths of an estimated eight to twelve million Congolese people. The current conditions in the Congo date back to this dark chapter in Belgian's presence in the Congo. In the past twenty-five years, over five million people have died in the Congo due to genocide, war, starvation, and mineral conflicts. But the challenges in the Congo are not the only story. The new Congo Reform Association, in partnership with Eastern Congo NGO's, is bringing stories of hope and transformation in people's lives. The Congolese are a resilient people, many whom are bringing positive initiatives to create a peaceful, prosperous and thriving Congo.
