Global National: May 16, 2026 | Canadian with hantavirus was isolating with partner

Description

A Canadian isolating in British Columbia has tested positive for hantavirus. The province’s top doctor says the patient – a senior from Yukon who was isolating with their partner – developed mild symptoms, including a fever and a headache. The patient is among four Canadian cruise ship passengers isolating on Vancouver Island, following a hantavirus outbreak on board. Nathaniel Dove reports on our top story tonight. A terror plot targeting Jewish sites in three U.S. states has been thwarted. As of Saturday, a suspect is in custody facing numerous terrorism-related charges. The alleged motive? Grievances over the war in Iran. As Candice Cole tells us, the accused is believed to have direct ties to similar operations in Europe, and right here in Canada. In the U.K., thousands of protesters have filled the streets of London as two rival protests unfold – underscoring the country's divisions over domestic and foreign policy. It's all happening as British Prime Minister Keir Starmer's political turmoil deepens. As Vincent McAviney reports, Starmer now faces several challenges to his leadership, including from within his own Labour party. This comes after disastrous local election results have made them vulnerable to the far-right Reform party. And, NHL fans are also hoping to keep the good times going. The Montreal Canadiens face off, once again, against the Buffalo Sabres Saturday tonight – in a decisive Game 6 that could propel the Habs into the Eastern Conference Finals, and a step closer to the Stanley Cup. Elizabeth Zogalis joins us from Montreal with more of the excitement.
