Description

Armiya Husein - flute, & Ananda Sukarlan - piano This piece for flute & piano is inspired by a painting by Vincent van Gogh with the same title. It is the last piece of "The Springs of Vincent" , 4 pieces for flute and piano Ananda Sukarlan wrote on Van Gogh's painting of springs Taken from the concert "5th Anniversary of Piano & Co." at Yamaha Music Building The Springs of Vincent (program note by Ananda Sukarlan) Vincent van Gogh’s depiction of spring and his feverish work in the spring to capture all of the color, light and beauty of the season is timeless.  Van Gogh approached spring with an eagerness to not only enjoy the rebirth of nature in spring, but to also share the colors of life in everything he saw and painted.  In a letter to his mother from February 20, 1890 Van Gogh wrote, “These last days we have had rather bad weather here, but today it was a real spring day, and the fields of young wheat, with the violet hills in the distance, are so beautiful, and the almond trees are beginning to blossom everywhere.” While living in Arles in the spring of 1888 Van Gogh was captivated by the flowering trees and orchards in bloom.  On April 2, 1888, Vincent wrote to his brother Theo: “I’m in a fever of work since the trees are in blossom and I want to do a Provençal orchard full of enormous brightness.”  During my student days at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Den Haag, I frequently visited the Gemeentemuseum and also Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. One of the painting that made a huge impression was "Flowering Garden with Path", and everytime I returned to observe it, the recurring melodies and chords popped inside my head. I was amazed how much that music stayed in my head and triggered to sound again when I wrote this music and looked at those paintings again through Google Art Project, 30 years later, now in Indonesia. "The Springs of Vincent" for flute and piano are dedicated to the magnificent musicians Eduard Sanchez and Enrique Bagaria whom I deeply admire
