Eric Cline On The Sea Peoples Invasion of Ancient Egypt

Description

Sea Peoples, Bronze Age Collapse, and Eric Cline are the focus of today's deep-dive podcast. Tristan Hughes is joined by world-renowned archaeologist and author Eric Cline to interrogate the enigmatic groups that allegedly brought the "G8 of the ancient world" to its knees. We explore the primary Egyptian inscriptions of Merneptah and Ramesses III, the haunting letters from the burning city of Ugarit, and why the Sea Peoples might have been victims of a "perfect storm" rather than just bloodthirsty invaders. In this episode, we break down the nine distinct groups that formed this confederation, including the Peleset (Philistines) and the Shardana. Professor Cline discusses groundbreaking new DNA evidence from Ashkelon that hints at the European origins of these migrants. From the naval battles in the Nile Delta to the climate-driven migrations that mirror modern crises, this is a comprehensive look at the mystery of 1177 BC. 0:00 Introduction to the Sea Peoples 1:20 The Bronze Age G8: A Globalised World 2:55 The Three Lines of Archaeological Evidence 5:40 Pharaoh Merneptah and the First Wave (1207 BC) 15:00 Ramesses III and the Battle of Medinet Habu 24:30 Decoding the Inscriptions: Who were the Shardana? 31:10 Identifying the Peleset and the Ahhiyawa 39:40 Migration vs Invasion: The Refugee Theory 44:55 New DNA Evidence from Ashkelon 51:00 The Destruction of Ugarit: A Smoking Gun 1:01:50 A Perfect Storm: What Caused the Collapse?
