Description
She is the only opposition candidate in Kamwenge District, and that decision has come at a high cost. Atuheirwe Patience’s campaign has been marked by threats, intimidation, and repeated attempts to silence her. She has faced warnings of arrest, offers meant to buy her withdrawal, and moments where remaining in her own constituency became too dangerous. Her life remains under pressure simply because she chose to stand. But her story did not begin in politics. After Senior Six, Patience left Uganda in search of survival, working in Saudi Arabia and later Qatar. What she encountered was exhaustion, illness, isolation, and a system that treats migrant labour as disposable. When many would have stayed away, she returned angry, determined, and unwilling to accept a country that forces its young people to flee in order to live. This conversation follows her journey from migrant work to resistance, from silence to defiance, and asks a difficult question: What does it cost to stand alone against power in Uganda today? This is not just an election story. It is a story about courage under pressure, the price of dissent, and why some refuse to disappear.
