Community to Contract: How Transaction Culture Is Reshaping Society | Office Hours

Description

In this episode of Office Hours, Jeremy and Dr. Roy examine the rise of hypertransactionalism — the growing tendency to treat nearly every aspect of life as a transaction. Dr. Roy explores how transactional logic, once limited to markets, now shapes education, healthcare, politics, and personal relationships. He argues this shift isn’t simply about greed or declining morals, but about structural incentives that reward calculation, leverage, and exchange over obligation and shared responsibility. As citizenship becomes more consumer-like and institutions operate increasingly through cost-benefit thinking, Dr. Roy asks what happens to trust, civic life, and community itself. This episode offers historical context and cultural analysis on a defining feature of modern society — and challenges viewers to reconsider the difference between community and contract. ~~~ 🔉 Dr. Roy Casagranda Podcast 🔉 Podcast Spotify ▶ https://open.spotify.com/show/6aebF9BEErbbiTLEHEyV6z Apple Podcast ▶ https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/dr-roy-casagranda-podcast/id1837193563 ~~~ Chapters 00:00:00 Opening & World Government Summit Introduction 00:02:10 AI Hype and the Dutch Tulip Bubble Comparison 00:11:57 Rational vs. Rationalizing 00:18:24 Ants vs. Bears – The Spectrum of Cooperation 00:23:41 Generational Wealth, Boomers, and Economic Shifts 00:28:38 When Everything Becomes a Transaction 00:34:29 Finland and Sweden – The Value of Cooperation 00:53:13 Transactional Politics and a Distancing of Historical and Cultural Priorities 01:03:53 Authoritarian Creep Symptoms – ICE and Losing Historical Connections 01:25:03 Power of Propaganda 01:44:28 Elon Musk, World Government, and “Too Much Cooperation” 01:49:37 Texas Politics (James Talarico) and Closing Thoughts #Hypertransactionalism #ModernSociety #SocialTheory #CivicLife #Culture ~~~ © Dr. Roy Casagranda – All Rights Reserved.
