Description
Order/Stream 'Maame' Now - https://CheikhLo.lnk.to/MaameID After a decade-long wait since his last studio album, Senegalese legend Cheikh Lô makes a powerful return with Maame, an expansive and deeply personal work born from isolation, resilience, and spiritual devotion. Recorded during (and after) the global lockdown in 2021, Maame emerges not only as a creative triumph, but also as a testament to Cheikh Lô’s enduring artistry. Following his landmark 2015 release — which earned him the distinction of being the first African artist to receive the WOMEX Artist Award — expectations were high. But rather than return to the studio immediately, Lô waited until the time felt right. Cheikh Lô not only composed and arranged the entire album but also played a wide range of instruments: guitar, drums, timbales, congas, shakers, and contributed to backing vocals. The result is a rich tapestry of sound that crosses genres with ease — from Afro-acoustic and African Salsa to Mbalax, Afro-blues, Reggae, Afro-pop, Classical, Jazz, and traditional Rumba. Traditional African instrumentation also takes center stage: balafon, kora, African flute, sabar, and talking drums all add depth and authenticity to the album’s diverse sonic landscape. Named after his spiritual guide Maame Massamba Ndiaye, who passed away in 2014, Maame is both a tribute and a spiritual offering. As a devoted member of the Baye Fall, a branch of Senegal’s Mouride community, Cheikh Lô imbues this album with deep spiritual undertones, also honouring Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba (one of the most important and revered religious figures in Senegalese history and founder of the Mouride Brotherhood) and Mame Cheikh Ibrahima Fall (founder of the Baye Fall movement). However, Maame is not only a spiritual record. It’s a profoundly Pan-African statement. On the reggae infused anthem "African Development," Lô calls for unity and progress across the continent. As a UNHCR ambassador, he also delivers the poignant track "Carte d’Identite" to raise awareness about statelessnes
