Canada seen as "reliable" and "very attractive to Asian partners" as pipeline takes new step: Carney

Description

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Friday that Canada is "viewed as a reliable country in a world that's anything but. We're viewed as a country that when we sign something, we honour it. We're viewed as a country that is now on the move, the country with ambition, with confidence, moving forward, a country that intends to build big. We're viewed as a country that is both an energy superpower and it believes in addressing climate change. And so the ability to combine all of that is very, very attractive to, Asian partners." The governments of Canada and Alberta have agreed to establish a new carbon pricing system and agreed on a start date for construction of a new oil pipeline that will be used to export energy to Asian markets. Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said, the agreements are part of a broader energy memorandum of understanding previously signed by Smith and Carney in November. Under the new agreement, Alberta will agree to increase its headline industrial carbon price to $140 per tonne by 2040. Currently, Alberta’s headline industrial carbon price is frozen at $95 per tonne until the end of 2026. Carney made the comments while visiting The United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry of the United States and Canada which represents nearly 400,000 skilled trades workers.
