Among Kings, a new historical fiction novel by Joey O'Connor, explores the amazing adventures of William Sheppard, the Congo's African American Livingstone, his beloved friend and white missionary partner, Samuel Lapsley and the courageous people who toppled King Leopold II of Belgium. Among Kings follows Sheppard and Lapsley deep into the heart of the dangerous, Belgian-controlled Congo. Traveling by steamship 1,000 miles up the Congo River, these two green missionaries battle lurking pythons, disease, cannibal tribes . . . and Leopold’s sinister army. Bonded by hardship, a deep interracial friendship emerges. In London, Europe and America, under the leadership of journalist Edmund Morel of the Congo Reform Association, a courageous host of men and women rise up to protest Leopold's atrocities in the Congo. Roger Casement, Booker T. Washington, W.E.B. Du Bois, Mark Twain, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Joseph Conrad, Alice Seeley Harris, William Cadbury and thousands demand justice and freedom for the Congolese people.
