The Trans-Saharan Trade: Salt, Gold, and Nigeria's Forgotten Caravans — Fexingo History

Описание

Before the Atlantic trade and European colonialism, northern Nigeria was a crucial node in a vast network connecting West Africa to the Mediterranean and Middle East. This episode follows the caravans crossing the Sahara, focusing on the Hausa city-states like Kano and Katsina, the role of salt and gold, and the intellectual exchange that brought Timbuktu's scholars south. Lucas and Luna explore how the trans-Saharan trade shaped Nigeria's political structures, introduced Islam centuries before the Sokoto jihad, and created a cosmopolitan culture in cities like Kano. They discuss the legendary empire of Kanem-Bornu, the rise of the Saifawa dynasty, and the pivotal role of the Mai (kings). The episode also examines the human cost—the slave trade across the desert—and the environmental realities of the Sahara crossing. A fresh angle that complements earlier episodes on Oyo, Benin, and Sokoto, revealing a deeper layer of Nigeria's precolonial history.#Nigeria #TransSaharanTrade #KanemBornu #Hausa #Kano #Katsina #SaltGold #Saifawa #Mai #Caravan #Sahara #IslamInAfrica #SlaveTrade #Precolonial #Timbuktu #WestAfrica #History #FexingoHistory #NigeriaHistory #BeninKingdomBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-history-of-nigeria-kingdoms-colonies-and-africa-s-giant-fexingo-history--6985098/support.
