The Rise of Ibadan: From War Camp to Empire — Fexingo History

Описание

Before Ibadan became the sprawling city it is today, it was a war camp for refugees and soldiers fleeing the collapse of the Oyo Empire. In this episode, Lucas and Luna explore how a motley group of Yoruba warriors, ex-slaves, and displaced farmers built a military republic that dominated the 19th century. They discuss the roles of key figures like Are-Ona-Kakanfo Oluyole and Iyalode Efunsetan Aniwura, the fierce rivalry with Ijaye, the use of cavalry and firearms, and the political system that made Ibadan a formidable power. Learn how the city's constitution, with its council of chiefs and elected war leaders, turned a makeshift settlement into an empire—until internal strife and colonial encroachment brought it down. This episode covers the Kiriji War, the influence of the Sokoto Caliphate, and the legacy of Ibadan's martial culture.#Ibadan #Yoruba #OyoEmpire #AreOnaKakanfo #Oluyole #IyalodeEfunsetan #Ijaye #KirijiWar #19thCenturyAfrica #MilitaryRepublic #YorubaWarfare #Abeokuta #SokotoCaliphate #ColonialNigeria #WestAfrica #History #FexingoHistory #NigeriaHistory #BeninKingdom #NokCultureBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-history-of-nigeria-kingdoms-colonies-and-africa-s-giant-fexingo-history--6985098/support.
