The empire flourished primarily due to its strategic role as a middleman in the trans-Saharan trade, where it maintained a monopoly on gold and collected taxes on imported goods. Governed by powerful kings like Tunka Manin, the state developed a sophisticated political structure that supported large armies and wealthy urban centers such as Kumbi Saleh. While the empire coexisted with growing Islamic influences, it eventually succumbed to internal instability and external pressures from Almoravid invaders and regional rivals. These records highlight how the Soninke people established a legacy of prosperity and organization that paved the way for the subsequent Mali Empire. Historical accounts from scholars like al-Bakri provide essential insights into the administrative brilliance and cultural life of this early West African civilization.
