Build an Unbreakable Mind: 12 Stoic Rules to Stop ReactingYou can stop most of your anger in the same moment it begins - a three-second gap where the choice to escalate or let go is made automatically. Stoic teachers like Epictetus traced every ruined day back to that tiny, observable reflex; what if holding one breath could save you hours of wasted energy and a quieter mind? How do you use those three seconds so the reaction doesn't become the story? In this episode, we walk through the practical habit behind the Stoic idea: notice the gap between stimulus and response, count to three with a conscious breath, and watch what changes in your body and choices. The episode covers why anger feels immediate, what the Stoics meant by the “construction” of anger, and how a simple three-second practice redirects where the real work happens - inside you.Person: EpictetusEvent: being enslaved and physically broken by a masterPractice: breathe once and count to three before respondingDuration: three seconds (the gap between stimulus and response)Example: meeting where a colleague takes credit for an idea- The automatic reaction to a provocation typically unfolds in about three seconds.- Epictetus said what affects us is not what people say but what we think about what they say.- A meeting example: idea taken without reference, three people nod, one person says "great thinking."- Epictetus reportedly had his leg twisted until it snapped as a demonstration of power.- The three-second rule is described as a literal instruction: breathe once, consciously and deep, and count to three. To listen to this podcast ad-free and access premium episodes, try our subscription with a 30-day free trial at obomedia.com.© 2026 OBOMEDIA.
