The Thirty-Three Saviors: Biographies, Beliefs, Sayings, and Virtue Ethics of the World’s Historical Christ like Figures: Myth, History, and the Search for the Divine Redeemer

In the Thirty-Three Saviors: Biographies, Beliefs, Sayings, and Virtue Ethics of the World’s Historical Christ-like Figures, the author, Dr. George Mentz, provides insights into the principles, ideas, and philosophies of the messianic religions of the world before The Christ emerged.Across civilizations and centuries, cultures have told the stories of redeemers—divine sons, martyrs, healers, and heroes who echo the archetype of the Christ. The Thirty-Three Saviorsexplores these figures in depth, weaving biography, myth, and virtue ethics into a sweeping study of humanity’s search for salvation. From Krishna, Buddha, and Prince Shōtoku in Asia, to Osiris, Horus, and Mithras in the ancient Near East, to Dionysus, Hercules, and Prometheus in the Mediterranean, and Quetzalcoatl and Balder in the Americas and North, this book examines the lives and legends of thirty-three figures once hailed as saviors. Each chapter explores their origins, teachings, cultural contexts, and the parallels—real or imagined—that link them with Christ.Far from repeating the errors of 19th-century comparativists like Kersey Graves, this work separates fact from exaggeration, presenting careful portraits that respect both history and faith. It also includes a treasury of reconstructed prayers, aphorisms, commandments, and “virtues of the saviors,” alongside reflections on the universal archetype of the dying and rising god.The result is both scholarly and spiritual: a global panorama of Christ-like figures that illuminates how human beings everywhere have longed for justice, renewal, and the triumph of life over death. The Thirty-Three Saviorsinvites readers into a deeper understanding of comparative religion, virtue ethics, and the enduring human hope for redemption.Read more
