Dr. Torres grew up part of a strict Roman Catholic family family in 1960’s Spain. As was typical at the time, family dysfunction was papered over with heavy denial. On the outside, his family exuded a radical normalcy, hinting even at success.. Underneath, lurked a complicated tapestry of accumulated eccentricities and shared fear. As a child, Dr. Torres internalized his mother’s anxieties and insecurities By the age of seven, he became a chronic worrier. From a young age, this intense and sustained worry led to the onset of his own anxiety disorder. His condition progressively aggravated until finally he rushed himself to the emergency room multiple times. After consulting numerous specialists and finding no relief, Torres decided to start treating himself.. In this book Dr. Torres describes in vivid detail his struggles and his efforts to regain his sanity and a positive outlook on life. In documenting the journey, he hopes to humanize and shed light on to a condition that too often goes unrecognized and untreated. “Panic attacks” cause real torment, terror and disability on a daily basis.
