Abolish Oil Now!: Abolitionists Beat Slavery and Abolitionists Can Beat Climate Change

“Climate change and ecological breakdown may one day be viewed with the same universal repugnance as slavery.”—DAVID ATTENBOROUGH, Naturalist and Broadcaster“Abolition succeeded in challenging entrenched wealth in ways that are comparable to what today’s movements must provoke if we are to avert climate catastrophe.”—NAOMI KLEIN, Climate Activist“The climate justice movement is demanding that an existing set of political and economic interests be forced to say goodbye to trillions of dollars of wealth. It is impossible to point to any precedent other than abolition.”—CHRIS HAYES, MSNBC BroadcasterNot another book about climate science,Abolish Oil Now!is about people, justice, and what it takes to win against big dirty money. Lessons from the most successful citizens movement of the past can help us dethrone fossil fuels and win the clean energy revolution in time to save civilization. With wildfires, droughts, and storms straight out of the apocalypse ravaging the nations of the earth, it's never been more urgent than it is today to slow and stop climate change. The only force blocking action is the political and economic power of Big Oil. If serious climate solutions are enacted, fossil fuel companies stand to lose about the same amount of money that American slaveowners lost when the Civil War ended slavery in 1865.That's why climate leaders say that only one movement in the past was big enough to serve as a model to overcome opposition from fossil fuels now: the movement to abolish slavery. With inspiring stories of abolition heroes like Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and William Lloyd Garrison,Abolish Oil Now!offers a proven model of political success with a special focus on race, pollution, and climate justice for Black Americans and other people of color.Read more
