54 Degrees North: A Walk Across England

What happens when you draw a perfectly straight line across England at exactly 54 degrees latitude and then attempt to walk it? Absolute chaos, that's what.Armed with a questionable sense of direction and an unhealthy curiosity, Paul sets off from Yorkshire’s east coast, somehow surviving his way to Lancashire—dodging rivers, fences, and a few angry farmers along the way.But this isn’t just a scenic stroll. Along this invisible line, Paul stumbles upon murderers, film stars, and witches, and discovers what links York with Lancaster. He also answers many questions, such as what do aliens have to do with Victorian bridges? Why did a blind man build our roads? And who thought it would be a good idea to drop a nuclear bomb on them?Packed with bizarre history, strange connections, and unexpected discoveries, this is a walk through England like you’ve never seen before—mainly because nobody in their right mind would attempt to do it.Paul was born and raised in Hull, Yorkshire—a place so magnificent it took him years of globe-trotting to realize he should’ve just stayed put. After visiting some of the world’s most exotic locations, he finally had an epiphany: nowhere beats the weird and wonderful charm of England. Now, he spends as much time as possible trudging around the country, uncovering its bizarre and fascinating history, and encountering a delightful mix of interesting, eccentric, and occasionally downright questionable people.Paul has written several books about his hiking adventure, includingCoast to Coast: Finding Wainwright's England,Hadrians Wall Walk,Rambling on: Lost on the Cleveland Way, andNorthbound on the West Highland Way.Read more
