Yasodhara: The Buddha’s Wife Left Behind

Deskripsi

Behind Buddhism's most famous awakening was a woman whose story almost disappeared from history. This is what really happened to Yasodhara—the woman Buddha left behind. When Siddhartha Gautama left his palace to seek enlightenment, he abandoned his wife Yasodhara and their newborn son Rahula without explanation. For six years, she lived in limbo—not knowing if she was a wife or a widow, raising a child who asked questions she couldn't answer. But Yasodhara's story doesn't end there. She became one of the first Buddhist nuns, a revolutionary teacher, and proof that enlightenment doesn't require abandoning responsibility—it requires transforming how you carry it. This is a documentary exploration of: - The night Buddha left (and why the texts say he almost stayed) - What those six years of abandonment actually looked like - The moment they reunited (and what she asked him) - How Yasodhara forced Buddhism to ordain women - Why her story was erased from most Buddhist teachings - What her life teaches us about spirituality and responsibility 00:00 - Imagine Waking Up Alone 00:28 - The Promise 01:07 - Who Yasodhara Really Was 02:32 - The Night Before He Left 03:19 - The Abandonment 04:00 - The Consequences No One Talks About 07:26 - Six Years in Limbo 08:00 - The Rumors Begin 08:44 - Preparing for the Reunion 09:41 - When They Met Again 10:28 - Breaking the Male-Only Rule 12:32 - Yasodhara teach 13:57 - The Hard Truth About Enlightenment 17:31 - The Question We Don't Ask 18:34 - Song for Yasodhara 20:21 - The Question I'm Still Sitting With SOURCES: - Therigatha (Verses of the Elder Nuns) - Lalitavistara Sutra - Vinaya Pitaka - Mahavastu - Contemporary Buddhist feminist scholarship If this story moved something in you, I'd genuinely like to know: If you were in Yasodhara's position, would you have forgiven? Joined? Or walked away? I don't know my own answer yet.
