In this episode, she breaks down the Eastern European origins of vampire hysteria in the 1730s, explains why New Orleans became the vampire capital of America, and gets into the deeply queer roots of vampire literature from 'Carmilla' to Anne Rice's Castro-district-inspired work. She also calls out the tourist behavior happening on cemetery graves (you know who you are). This isn't your basic vampire explainer. Rose brings the receipts: historical, folkloric, and personal. And yes, she'll tell you why you should never leave a crystal ball uncovered. "Vampires are us. They reflect our fears and our dark desires."______________________________Timestamps:00:00 - Introducing Rose Sinister01:42 - What makes New Orleans haunted03:32 - Interview with a Vampire, Vlad the Impaler04:59 - Weird fears05:56 - How to become a vampire08:56 - Anne Rice changed everything10:20 - Earliest vampires in New Orleans14:27 - Vampires vs werewolves17:55 - The legacy of Dracula20:59 - The scariest NOLA vampire story28:39 - Misconceptions about vampires35:56 - Where did vampires come from?41:09 - Vampires and the LGBT44:28 - Meeting real life vampires55:45 - Why vampires don't have reflections1:00:13 - The allure of vampirism1:04:33 - Rose
