The Fintech Trap: Why Your Startup Is Actually Just a Bank in Disguise

Deskripsi

Most African fintechs are running the same play: FX, remittances, repeat. That's Andrew Lee's read on where the sector is right now. Andrew spent a decade at the IFC, then helped build the Africa Finance Corporation from a young institution into an A-minus rated continental powerhouse — one of the only African financial institutions with an investment-grade credit rating. Few people have watched as many African deals close (and fall apart) as he has. In this clip, he explains why every fintech that scales eventually has to become a bank, why the "me too" wave is a dead end, and where he thinks the real opportunities are hiding: trade finance, treasury operations, asset management. The boring stuff nobody pitches. If you're a founder, investor, or operator thinking about where to put time or capital in Africa right now, this section is worth replaying.
