In the year 878, the fate of Anglo-Saxon England hung by a thread. King Alfred of Wessex, driven into exile after a devastating Viking ambush, found refuge in the marshes of Somerset. With his kingdom on the brink of collapse and much of England already under Viking control, Alfred’s survival seemed unlikely. This video explores the dramatic chain of events leading to the Battle of Edington, one of the most decisive confrontations in English history. From the rise of Viking leaders like Guthrum and Halfdan, to the fall of Mercia and the near destruction of Wessex, we trace the relentless advance of the Great Heathen Army. Against overwhelming odds, Alfred regrouped, waged a guerrilla campaign, and rallied his forces for a final stand. The clash at Edington would determine not only the fate of Wessex, but the future of England itself. Discover how Alfred’s victory led to the Treaty of Wedmore, the conversion of Guthrum, and the survival of the last independent English kingdom. This is the story of resilience, strategy, and the turning point that shaped a nation.
