Revolution 250 Podcast — Turning War into Winnings: Privateers & Prize Law

Deskripsi

In this episode of the Revolution 250 Podcast, host Professor Bob Allison welcomes legal historian Suzanne Amy Foxley, author of The American Experience of British Prize Law, for a deep dive into the legal and maritime world that powered the Revolution beyond the battlefield. Together, they explore how privateering turned colonial merchant ships into instruments of war, how British prize courts shaped American ideas of justice and sovereignty, and how captured cargo, contested claims, and courtroom battles helped finance the patriot cause. From bustling Atlantic ports to improvised admiralty courts, Foxley reveals how law, commerce, and conflict collided to create a distinctly American approach to war at sea. It’s a conversation about cannons and contracts, sailors and statutes, and the hidden legal architecture that helped transform rebellion into nationhood. 🎙️ New to streaming or looking to level up?
