Jailing Romualdez Will be the Greatest Fulfillment of an Ombudsman’s Duty to His Country

Can Boying solidify his legacy as the Ombudsman who jailed Martin "The Master Plunderer" Romualdez? PGMN Anchor Jourdan Sebastian and PGMN Founder Franco Mabanta say they now see Ombudsman Boying Remulla’s actions against Martin Romualdez as more than mere political optics. After learning more about Remulla’s battle with cancer and the legacy he may want to leave, Jourdan said the real test is whether the Ombudsman has the acumen and stamina to pursue the case against the country’s most corrupt politician of the 21st century—and see it to the end. Franco futher pushed that taking down Romualdez would represent the highest fulfillment of the Ombudsman’s mandate. Romualdez has the money, influence and resources to fight at every level, so Remulla must build a case strong enough to survive the Sandiganbayan, withstand every legal challenge and force Romualdez to face full accountability. On July 24, 2026, Ombudsman investigators filed a 104-page supplemental complaint recommending preliminary investigation for plunder, graft, bribery and money laundering over an alleged ₱56-billion scheme from 2022 to 2025. On July 28, Romualdez and his co-respondents were given 15 days from receipt to submit counter-affidavits. No court charges have yet resulted from this complaint, but the investigation has advanced from accusations to a formal process requiring Romualdez to confront the evidence against him. Corruption is and has always been the Philippines’ biggest problem. Romualdez is universally recognized as the most corrupt Filipino politician of the 21st century.
