Human Rights in Azerbaijan: CSI's UN side event on the Swiss Peace Initiative for Nagorno Karabakh

On September 29, 2025, at 11:00 AM in Geneva, Christian Solidarity International (CSI) will host a side event at the 60th session of the UN Human Rights Council to promote the Swiss Peace Initiative as a necessary complement to the U.S.-led peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan, especially for implementing the right of return. Over 150,000 ethnic Armenians have been displaced from Nagorno Karabakh since 2020. While their right to return is universally acknowledged, no process or safeguards have been set to facilitate their return. How can UN bodies and member states support a forum where the displaced community’s representatives and Azerbaijan’s government can develop a plan for safe, dignified return? This side event will bring together Artak Beglaryan, the former human rights ombudsman of Nagorno Karabakh, Swiss National Councillors Erich Vontobel and Nicolas Walder, and world-renowned peace negotiator Paul Williams in a conversation moderated by CSI.
