Global National: May 17, 2026 | Risk of spread high after Ebola outbreak in Congo, Uganda

Deskripsi

A global health emergency has been declared over a rare and deadly strain of the Ebola virus. The World Health Organization says the outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Uganda, is behind at least 80 suspected deaths and 246 suspected cases. While it does not meet the threshold for a pandemic, officials warn that the situation is dangerous and could be much larger than detected. As Vincent McAviney reports, there's a significant risk of spread to neighbouring countries. Canadian Conservative MP Michael Chong is in Taipei meeting with its president and other Taiwanese officials. His trip follows a recent warning from China’s ambassador not to do so and comes just days after U.S. President Donald Trump cautioned Taiwan against officially declaring its independence. Nathanial Dove has more on the MP signaling Canadian support at a precarious time. In the Middle East, the fragile ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran is hanging by a thread as strikes on other countries in the region continue. The violence is ramping up uncertainty in the global economy – especially as the Strait of Hormuz remains under a blockade – driving up fuel prices everywhere. Candice Cole has the latest. Plus, community leaders, activists and elected officials gathered in Montreal Sunday to mark International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia. It also marks the 25th anniversary of a historic march in the West Island that paved the path for landmark human rights decisions against discrimination based on sexual orientation.
